JOHANNESBURG – The Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) announced, as he said, the qualifications of the head of the office after the question about the legitimacy of her appointment.

The department said Nthabiseng Borotho provided valuable insight to the department that was at the center of political interference.

She fell into a saga of post-matrix qualifications after the Sunday Independent revealed earlier this year that she had been appointed by Minister Pravin Gordhan despite not meeting the minimum criteria.

The Public Enterprise Department appears to have pressured him to explain in detail how Borotho was appointed head of the office.

In a statement, the department outlined Boroth’s career trajectory from when she graduated in 1997 to moments before Gordhan appointed her two years ago.

The department said she has worked in various government positions where she has distinguished herself as a dedicated, skilled civil servant.

In remarks that seemingly respond to allegations that Borotho turned from a ministry into a family employment agency by hiring his half-sister, the department also admitted that her cousin was urgently appointed as a receptionist at their Cape Town office.

Still, it’s not clear why the department took so long to clean the air when questions were raised about Boroth’s appointment last year.

The statement also says nothing about allegations that Gordhan used the saga to attack those who raised the issue, as opposed to resolving concerns.
