But they fell again beneath the mark, which means they will still wait for the first builders' championship since 2008.
Sebastian Vettel fought to rediscover his Red Bull form in the famous Ferrari red, with consistent errors that have hurt him so far.
Questions are raised as to whether to consider retirement after his contract expires in late 2020.
He became frustrated by the current state of Formula 1, and this could leave one of the most sought-after places available.

"I'm sure every driver wants to drive for Ferrari," said Button for Autobild.
"But no driver who is still in the senses would move from the winning team to the one that is not competitive.
"It would be very brave and unusual to go to Ferrari.
– Lewis could eventually win ten world titles if he stayed with Mercedes.
"But if he goes to Ferrari, that could be the end of his career."
The action returns to the Grand Prix Germany next weekend before the Grand Prize of Hungary a week later.
The summer break will follow the race on Hungaroring, which is often when contract negotiations start for the next year.
