Drinking and smoking increases the risk of esophageal cancer

To study it, analyzed samples of the esophagus of 139 patients with and without cancer and sought for these mutations. They also took into account the history of consumption of these two substances. The result? Many samples contained mutations (exactly in the cancer-related gene). Although they may occur since childhood, the number of mutated cells increases with age, to the extent that people over 70 have a significant share.

In this regard, the leader of the work, Seishi Ogawa, explained to foreign media that, Despite the progressive increase in the number of tumor mutations, the risk of developing cancer is low, "We have come to the conclusion that in the case of smokers and heavy alcoholics the accumulation process of mutations is significantly accelerated, suggesting that these environmental factors are critical to the risk of developing this type of tumor," he added.
