You probably did not notice, but with the latest major update of Windows 10, or a problematic version of October 2018, which just six months later installed only a quarter of users, Windows 10 changed the way we pulled out USB devices from a computer.
The change is unclear unless we go to the deepest part of the USB device settings and find a description of the two exclusion policies that we can choose from: Better performance or quick extraction.
How to use it to eject USB devices
Every Windows user knows that for years when we want to extract a pendrive or any USB-connected storage disk, we need to do it click the icon on the taskbar to safely eject it before disconnecting from the terminal.
When we do not do that, Windows usually complains and warns us that it can not cause problems. You may have noticed that if you installed an update from October 2018, this warning no longer appears, and the message that "sure to disconnect the device" is not displayed, though the icon still appears in the taskbar.
The reason for this is that Windows 10 has a new policy when it comes to extracting USB or Thunderbolt devices that are used as external storage.
New Windows 10 Directories to Extract External Storage Devices
Previously, by default, Windows cached write operations to an external device, meaning the system could be sure that all operations saved in the cache would end, that you have to tell Windows that you will extract the device by clicking on that safe eject icon.
That's what Windows calls for a better policy of expelling the performance. This is one that, as the logic would point out, it takes more time.
The new directive, "Quick Extraction", functions as the name implies: fast. The way that operations are managed now means that the device is ready for removal at any time, that is, without the need to click on the icon to safely pull it out.
The problem is that Microsoft warns that "it may exacerbate system performance". Or to expect, since the operations saved in the cache have not been stored, You may have problems copying a file or backing up documents.
How to change the rules in accordance with your device
Fortunately, Windows 10 still allows us to change the way we eject our devices, just that we will have to do this for each of them individually.
If you want to pull out your pendrive always quickly and without worrying about clicking on the icon, you can keep it in the way, but at least in the case of a backup device, or with a very important or critical material for you, it is better to use the old better performance option.
You need to open the tool for that Disk Management:
- Connect the USB device
- Check the drive letter from the file browser
- Then right-click the launch button and select the disk manager.
When you arrive, right-click on the USB device and select real estateThen go to the card Directive, check the box Better performance and press OK.
This procedure must be repeated for all the devices you deem necessary. It is understandable that Microsoft has changed the default rule, given how normal it is for people to remove USB without the first click on secure eject and the fast process has a small chance to collapseIt's strange that after the update you did not notice the change.
