RAHEEM Sterling has gone from farcical to the highest in helping Manchester City to 6-0 defeat over Shakhtar Donetsk and on the edge of qualifying for the Champions League.
The Angler's wing provided the lead in a more convincing victory for City when he scored his finger in the grass as he tried to shoot in 24 minutes and crashed.
Judge Viktor Kassai won the penalty, despite not having been in touch with the defender – a lot of Shakhtar's amusement, some of whom even made the decision – and Gabrijel Isus turned spot spot for the first of his three goals in the night.
That was 2-0 in 24 minutes, after David Silva opened close scoring at 13.
Sterling showed much more balance in reaching the City's third goal, taking the ball 40 m, feeding through two possible tacklers and curling fierce shot at the top corner from the edge of the area at 48.
Champions League: Manchester City handed the penalty to the gift of Gabriel Jesus.
The worst callout ever?
Jesus managed to reach 4: 0 in 72, again from the penalty spot after Silva stopped Taras Stepanenko, and Riyad Mahrez and Jesus – for the purpose of completing their shields – ended their scoring.
The city remained in first place in Group F, but moved three points ahead of Lyon after the French club took 2-2 against Hoffenheim.
The English Champion needs another point from the last two games to be sure of a top finish.
Following the latest city attack on the Masterclass, it was a punishment – brought by a judge who served in the Champions League and World Cup final – that would be best remembered. This has led to the expansion of Sterling around the world on social media.
It was so obvious that Sterling beaten instead of breaking Shakhtar defender Mykole Matvyenko, that city manager Pep Guardiola covered his face with his hands after the incident before pushing his finger to his bench, pointing out that the penalty should not have been awarded. Sergio Aguero, the deputy who was sitting in front of Guardiola, had a smile on his face.
Officials behind the goal – used in UEFA competitions instead of video assistants – seemed to have a good overview of the trip but somehow did not see it.
Sterling looked somewhat scary as he walked from where he fell, and the judge did not say he had no contact with the opponent.
The city has won 23 goals in the last six games at all competitions, which went to the Premier League against Manchester United on weekends.
Meanwhile, Leonardo Bonucci's 90th minute of his own goal succeeded Manchester United with a dramatic victory over Juventus in the Champions League, as Jose Mourinho defeated Cristiano Ronaldo's glittering sand.
Ronaldo struck magnificently first in 65 minutes to seemingly leave Juve on the course for the last 16 but Juan Mata equalized with a 86th minute free kick before Bonucci turned to his net.
Benzema stars in Real
Karim Benzema won twice in the first half to lead Real Madrid back to 5-0 victory over Victor Plzen.
Casemiro, Gareth Bale and Toni Kroos also scored points for the three-time defensive champions, who have won three in a row since Julen Lopetegui fired, and coach Santiago Solari took over.
The win reached Madrid at nine points with Roma, who won 2-1 in CSKA Moscow.
Madrid and Roma can both close the venue in a victorious stage with one win over their last two matches.
Czech champion Viktoria Plzen, playing on the collective stage for the first time since 2013, has remained at one point and eliminated.
The duel of the attacker gets Bayern's house
Robert Lewandowski scored twice for Bayern Munich to win AEK Athens 2-0 and went even closer to the stage at the Champions League.
The Polish striker opened a hit in the first half and ordered a win in seconds after Bayern's corner.
The home side tried to create any chance of recording while Serbian defender Uros Cosic was sentenced to withdrawing Lewandowski's back half an hour ago and a half from the place.
Bayern dominated possession, and Lewandowski grabbed the fourth Champions League this season after cornering with Joshua Kimmich for the remaining 20 minutes.
With 10 points out of four games, Bayern are at the top of the group E.
Ajax, who played for Benfica 1-1 in the second group, was second in eight points with the remaining two games, followed by Benfica at four. AEK are the last after four defeats.
