How to Help Children Fight Flu



Adding berry fruit and yogurt to foods instead of swallowing vitamin pills is one of the natural ways to strengthen the immune system and help cough and cold.

Encouraging a child's immune system to cough and cold can be a challenge for most parents.

But experts say that instead of turning to orange, garlic and vitamin tablets as a solution, a few simple meal supplements can make a difference.

Patient Dietary Miriam Raleigh says a variety of nutrition is much more useful than pill cracking.

"Increasing the input of just one specific thing will never do a trick," she said.

"Parents should always think about a varied diet with their children to make sure they get a wide variety of foods.

"We must eat lots of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and probiotics, and try to minimize packaged and highly processed foods because they do not offer much nutrition.

"The key is trying to do things differently every day and not eating too much of the same thing."

She said that a varied diet, especially in winter, was better than a vitamin C pill when it comes to protecting children from colds and flu.

Mother of two children Jenne said that children of Gwynie, the 3 and 22-month-old Tal were by now not sick due to this season of colds and flu, and believe this is due to a varied diet and creative thinking.

Jenna says she exhibits her kids a wide range of fruits and vegetables, uses games to stimulate healthy eating, and moves them from packaged and processed foods along with fun and colorful lunch boxes.

"If the board looks fun and colorful, kids are more likely to eat, we always try to have a wide variety of colors on the plate," she said.

Jenna launched a blog titled "Mom of Two Bumbling",help other parents tackle challenges with young children and entertainments while learning through the game.

Some of her tips include getting yogurt-containing probiotics that contain living cultures as an alternative to buying tablets. And for the daily dose of antioxidants, it suggests many colored foods, berries and fatty fish.

To get vitamin C naturally, there are many alternatives to citrus fruits – such as capsicum, broccoli and spinach.

The cold and flu season usually lasts from April to October, reaching peak in August. Confirmed cases were higher than this year.
