NRL 2019: Cronulla Sharks; Michael Ennis says Anthony Griffin should be a new coach, not John Morris and Cameron Ciraldo

Michael Ennis called Cronul to fight with the dismissed Penrith leader Anthony Griffin while running to watch replacing Shane Flanagan.

John Morris, who has taken on an interim basis, is still a leading job candidate with the club that is expected to release his plans over the next week.

Assistant Penrith Cameron Ciraldo is experiencing another as a candidate, while Justin Holbrooke's deal with St. Helens could be a blockage for his chances.

News Corp reported that the club was considering two experienced trainers, but their identity remained secretive.

Ennis, who won the premiere in 2016 at the Flanagan seafront before retirement, claimed that Griffin and former North Queensland coach and Gold Coasta Neil Henry should be considered leaders.

He said the club had a premiership window and needed an experienced mentor to lead them to another title.

"I would probably have taken Anthony Griffin to be honest," Ennis told Fox Sports.

"Just because of the fact that last year he did a great job in Penrith. Most of the season they were in the fourth place before they got the bag.

"Put someone with little youth and enthusiasm alongside him as a helper and they could damage this list."

One of Griffin's potential for blocking this attitude is the deterioration of Matt Moyle's relationship, which led to the ex-captain Penrith to Shark.

The two of them clashed because of Moylan's desire to move on five to eight.

Griffin later said of his relationship with Moyle: "He is the captain of the club, he has played soccer football here and you never want to have such a conflict, but that has happened."

Ennis said that Shark had a strong personality capable of putting his stamp on the game.

"I was very strong about this – that this toy group in Cronulli needs an experienced trainer," he continued.

"They need someone who is an instructor, who is also a dictator, and he has a really good balance in being able to listen to a group that is playing but is able to put his authority on the group."
