Federer's transition to the semifinals is still uncertain – next Kevin Anderson, and Nishikori and Thiem playing each other, will have to win to give way to progress. This should be much harder than Thiem tonight.
Roger says! "I feel good, I'm very happy to have shown the reaction. I did not get used to losing, and then back to play, that was a good test.
"There were four against Kei, we all played very badly, and I felt very negative. That was a little disappointing, and Kei eventually played better.
"Today I played much better, and it's always a privilege to play here in London, and I tried to remember it."
Roger Federer wins Dominic Thiem 6-2, 6-3!
Everything is almost as Thiem sends the cave – his 34th unsuccessful mistake in the game. He was out of the game, but Federer got a job and got the first win in the tournament.
Second set: Thiem 2-6, 3-5 * Federer (* indicates the next server) Will Thiem do Federer? It network Federer's return to less than ideal start and then produces an orderly midfield fall. Federer rolls his next back just wide, and challenges without success. Another Thiem Mishit makes it 30-of, and he is caught by the loopback drop he drops in. Mech ball … He saved himself as Thiem firmly in the next gathering. Federer does not allow it to repeat, dominating the other for another game …
Second set: Thiem 2-6, * 3-5 Federer (* indicates the next server) Federer did not need to leave the other equipment, firing the three, and winning the only rally when Thiem lost the ball and the ball was on the stands. Federer is, of course, very strong for serving tonight.
Second set: Thiem 2-6, 3-4 Federer (* indicates the next server) Finally, a comfortable gaming service for Thiem as he likes to love. However, time is running out to consume the enemy.
Second set: Thiem 2-6, * 2-4 Federer (* indicates the next server) Thiem has played some nice things among the mistakes – he goes with Federer with the will on the net here. Unfortunately, he's already 40-0 down, Federer's service looks very strong – he has not yet faced an interruption and is not here.
Second set: Thiem 2-6, 2-3 * Federer (* indicates next server) Thiem shows an insight into his ability in this game, especially with the predecessor to an angle that can not be approached. At 40-15, he networked after Federer's chip fired bounces low on the surface. Thiem encourages him to move away and looks ready to throw himself into the towel, but finds the basic line with his hand and hangs at his service.
Second set: Thiem 2-6, * 1-3 Federer (* indicates the next server) Thiem's return sends the net, giving him a chance – but puts sand into the net and walks, shaking his head. It's the only chance of getting into a routine waiting, sealed with a perennial drop.
Second set: Thiem 2-6, 1-2 * Federer (* indicates next server) The upcoming singles match in London has been won in flat sets, and it would be a surprise if it does not happen here. Thiem at least shows some of the fights here, ranging from 40 to 15 in front with cross-courter and finding great other serve to hold.
Second set: Thiem 2-6, * 0-2 Federer (* indicates next server) Federer looks at a good voice, though he does not test there. He races to love service.
Second set: Thiem 2-6, 0-1 * Federer (* indicates next server) Thiem tried to be aggressive, but he did not have the correctness to pull him out. He is trying to get into a land game with Federer, but he does not get any joy, Federer is effortlessly pinging. Thiem loses his heart and gives up his service.
Federer wins the first set!
First set: Thiem 2-6 * Federer (* indicates next server) Federer seems to serve a set, and it is difficult to see Thiem raise a lot of resistance. As I write it, he combs his hand with a knee down the line. It is 30 to 15, the other serves, and Thiem leaves an apology to return outside the base line. The Fed locks him with a gun.
Several stars of soccer names in the crowd tonight: Real Madrid Toni Kroos, Bournemouth guard Asmir Begović and West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini. Federer is in a good age group; maybe he measured a one-year job.
First set: Thiem 2-5 * Federer (* indicates next server) Thiem does not play well enough that even 50% fit Federer; he is trying to overcome the conversion attempt in the network, and then adds a double error in his unsuccessful error. Another point of interruption for Federer, taken as Thiem, misunderstood a bit more unpleasant sand.
First set: Thiem * 2-4 Federer (* indicates next server) Thiem can feel better after getting another game on board – but can he make the way to Federer's service? Not here – Federer takes control with a brilliant, short-term strike and closes with an ax.
First set: Thiem 2-3 * Federer (* indicates next server) Thiem got upset again, and unfinished errors dropped as he stopped 15-30. At the second service, he takes off the rally and then comes to the net to the next. Still, he surpassed another forehand and he is prime minister. Federer takes advantage of a return to the miles and Thiem holds.
First set: Thiem * 1-3 Federer (* indicates the next server) Back service is the weakness of Thiem, and he fights here while Federer runs at 40-15. Ace closes, and looks good.
First set: Thiem 1-2 * Federer (* indicates next server) Another speculation on the opportunity for Federer on 15-30, but he ballooned the whistle. More than a dozen unfulfilled mistakes – it was a waste. Thiem gets better than the next rally, but the net as Federer sets it apart! The dot stops, taken as Thiem overhits shot down the line.
"Maybe Federer's got a new contract with the training company, it has to handle it longer," suggests Andrew Benton. "And 95% Federer can easily beat Thiem!"
True, but Federer is 95%? Can you beat Thiem to 80%? The answer is probably.
First set: Thiem * 1-1 Federer (* indicates next server) Federer tries to find his rhythm at the service but hits the net in 30-15. A few first weights ensure first retention.
First set: Thiem 1-0 * Federer (* indicates next server) Thiem supplies volleyball to the net to slip 0 to 30 behind, but gathers with a few pledges to strike. Thiem then leaves for a long time, renouncing the break, but saves him by serving wide, and flashing the cross winner. Thiem lacks a couple of chances to get out of the game, but volleyball and fast secondary service get the job.
Here we go, Thiem serves first in front of the packed house.
Federer wins the throw and decides to win first, which is his usual tactics. He kept his tank top for warming, which led to more speculation from Russians and co that he did not feel 100%.
Players move in court. Federer, predictably enough, gets far bigger ovation. The comment team thinks it looks nervous – I doubt it.
Here's Rogera! "I just had to play better, be a bit more positive, I'm very excited to have a chance. Indoor tennis, I have to be aggressive and play for victory."
Thiem has a rare difference in having a winner record against Federer, from two to one. However, they have not played since 2016.
Of course, there is not Andy Murray here, but his brother, Jamie, has reached double semifinals with his partner Bruno Soares. The 6-4, 6-3 wins against the Colombian two Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah have just come out. In the semifinals they are in the third consecutive year, though they have never reached the end.
Hi. Stages of round robin in those seasonal jobs can become complicated, confusing things, but Roger Federer's equation is very simple. He has to defeat Dominic Thiem or eliminate a face in groups at the World Cup finals for the first time since being re-broadcast and moving to London in 2009.
His loss to Kei Nishikori left him in an uncertain position in his group, while Thiem also slipped to win against Kevin Anderson. Federer still remains a strong favorites to win tonight, but today Nishikori's performance – a terrible 6-0, 6-1 loss to Anderson – raises questions about Federer's form. Playback starts at 20:00 GMT.
