STEYR. The BMW manufacturer BMW and its largest engine factory in Steyry are preparing for the future with several drive models.

The key is in "flexibility in all directions," says Christoph Schröder. During assembly, gasoline, diesel, rear, front and all four wheels must be produced on one line using a modular system.

Electric motors are still installed exclusively in Dingolfing. However, by processing a casing for electric motors in mechanical production at Steyr, the plant also receives at least one foot in this door. The first cases will be delivered in March. In 2021, 460,000 units will be processed annually. Investment volume: EUR 58 million.

In Steyera, the new assembly line will be commissioned in the second half of the year. It will be fitted with the latest generation of four and six cylinder petrol engines. There will be 260 employees. Target investment: EUR 74 million.

Further investments in the development of diesel fuel continue: "We are working on the next generation of diesel engines, which will start in 2020," the plant manager said. New "complex components of the electric motor" are being developed in the development center, Schröder says. Cooling circuits for Stromer would also be developed and tested at Steyr.

With these activities, Schröder wants to ruin the impression that the factory in Steyr has no future. He is also trying to relativize the wiping of the only clean diesel engine: "We've done the same number of units, but we can do that in a full two-shifter job better than in a poorly-used three-way."

The biggest employment

Reducing the number of jobs has therefore only reduced the number of temporary workers in the "two-digit range". "That's less than two percent of the workforce." Schröder points out that 750 jobs have been achieved over the past two years. With 3610 employees and employees, basic workforce is at the highest level (plus 4.6 percent). In addition, at the end of 2018 there will be 1035 leasing forces (minus three percent per annum).

The engine drive is and will remain an important part of the BMW network, aligns Schroeder with those who in the long term question the future of the plant and the diesel fuel development center. "I see the plant for five years with a quantity of production similar to the current one." Like the previous year, around 300m euros will be invested in the construction site.

Power plant turnover in 2018 amounted to 3.6 billion euros, a drop of five percent. The production volume of 1.2 million units is down by eight percent compared to 2017.

Since Magna builds the BMW 5 Series and Z4 in Graz, BMW sees itself as the "largest automaker in Austria". In 2018, 64,000 pieces were recorded in Graz. BMW has provided more than 10,000 jobs, according to a yearly media interview. 6.6 billion euros are made by BMW's sales companies in Austria, which is six percent less than last year. The sales company in Salzburg recorded a decline of ten percent to 1.7 billion euros.
