French Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has appeared in court several times on charges of being involved in a controversy over sexual footage. He is on trial next Tuesday, according to AFP.
The incident happened in 2015. The footballers of the then French national team went to the hotel together to play the match. There, Benzema’s teammate Matthew Valbuena filmed a sex tape. Some blackmailers accidentally got the tape. They demanded large sums of money. Otherwise, he threatened to expand the tape to Valbuena.
The blackmail case was filed in July of that year over the incident. Police later arrested the three suspects. With whom several footballers, including Benzema, had friendships. Valbuena’s teammate Jibril Ciseke was also detained. He was released after questioning. It is believed that one of Benzema’s relatives was in contact with the blackmailers. However, it is uncertain whether Benzema was involved. French police have been investigating this for some time. If convicted, Benzema could face up to five years in prison.
Benzema was expelled from the national team the same year for filming sex tapes. He then applied to play for another country. Benzema, of course, had such an opportunity a long time ago. He had the opportunity to play in the African Cup of Nations for Algeria in 2006. But he chose France. Now he dreams of playing for Algeria. But the biggest obstacle before us is the case.
Benzema’s lawyer claims that the Real Madrid striker did not threaten anyone and that he did not participate in the sex tape. Attorney Paul-Albert Levins said, ‘His (Benzema’s) decision to try is unreasonable. In this case, there is nothing to be ashamed of. Benzema played 61 games for France before being deported from the national team.
