COVID-19: BC almost left without AstraZeneca vaccine, no longer expected “short-term”

If you have not been vaccinated and hope to receive an injection of Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 in BC, chances are you are out of luck – at least for now.

“Currently, there is very little AstraZeneca left in the province,” Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said at her briefing Thursday.

“We have no indications that we will receive more in the short term. For people who have already received it, we have guarantees that we will get some of it so that we can provide other doses to everyone who needs them. “

Henry said the province is working to move that little vaccine stock from pharmacies to low-intake areas where it is needed more.

It comes because demand for the vaccine is rapidly outpacing supply in the Lower Mainland.

The age acceptability of the vaccine was reduced to 40 last and to 30 this week, prompting mass waiting lists in pharmacies.

Canada has signed a contract to receive up to 20 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine, and 2.3 million have been shipped so far.

Earlier this month, he expected a million doses from the Indian Serum Institute, but shipments were suspended as the South Asian country struggled with its own rush of new cases.

Federal Public Procurement Minister Anita Anand said on April 16 that Canada still expects to receive 4.1 million doses of AstraZeneca from all sources by the end of June.
