"I'm like cancer, the more they attack me, the more I spread." On October 4 last year, Chilean musician and metal player Juanjo Feijoo, known in the round as Juaniya, wrote that message on his Facebook account, which could be prophetic over the months: his name was promoted in recent days as never in his career.
And precisely because part of his underground work was tangentially hit by the first major political controversy in 2019: in the space that he ran on YouTube in 1977, "Album", his interview with deputy Gabriel Borić culminated in the gift of T-shirt on to which Jaime Guzman's face seemed to be punched with a bullet. The record was broadcast by José Antonio Kast and received criticism from various political sectors, prompting a man from Frente Amplio to offer public apologies, especially for the laughter he expressed when he received the gift.
But the other protagonist of that band, Juaniya himself, wanted to be silent. In contact with La Tercer PM, he does not make statements, despite his name and track being able to track social networks and the Santiago metal scene.
Moreover, near Del Mal Serigrafía, a store that hosted its program on a digital platform – the one that he directed – and who, from his Persian-speaking rooms, Biobio specializes in shirts not only for extreme heavy rock but also characters such as Augusta Pinoche and Lucia Hiriart. On the web are defined as "heretic clothing" ("heretic clothing").
In fact, in the second episode of his program, also broadcasted in 2017, he gives the same shirt to the UDI senator Alvaro Spain, the voice and leader of the Punk band Fiskales Ad-Hok. "This shirt is amazing because it is the icon of the country's most poignant," says the singer to receive a dress.
In national music, Juaniya has made a name for himself with his group of names – where he is surrounded by different musicians – and in the niche of industrial metal: the style is anchored in vocal clarity, distortion of the buttocks, twitter and rhythmic base. crunching, aggressive and dark, with elements taken from the most visceral electron. His texts are mostly self-sufficient, a reality lapidary, helpless and powerful personal and existential pessimism. His four albums so far, released in the four-year career range, are available at Spotify. "Mandibular Structure", "Great Suicidal Success" and "Pyrotechnic Vascular" are some of his recordings.
Its aesthetics is also curious: it mixes monstrous makeup, yellow pericles, and a tendency towards the world up. "Without wigs, I'm just a shy and sad child in the world of predators," he said recently on Facebook. In his social networks you can also appreciate his liking for characters such as Charles Manson, perhaps the most fabulous serial killer of the 1960s.
According to some acquaintances of his career, this is something like a "separate name" in national metal: his proposal is peculiar and does not communicate too much with the styles that dominate the land and the Chilean bases, more linked to humiliation. metal and death metal, which were mainly characterized by its speed, urgency and gloomy voices. In a way, the circuit is pretty "purist" and there is resistance to bets with a more diverse musical language.
They close the assurance that today the singer was "scared" before his sudden exaggeration and that he "received threats" for what initiated a short-term project and almost seemed to be forgotten: the cycle of digital programs where he asked different artistic personalities to the albums that made their lives worse. In addition to Borić and Spain, Alfredo Lewin, Jean Philippe Cretton and "el Rumpy" went through.
There is no clarity as to where the idea of drawing polar with the portrait of Guzman was born and gave them a program. After all, on his Facebook page there is another sentence that seems to synthesize his current moment, the unexpected glory, this glorious glory that casts him out of the shadows to unconsciously place him in the present of Gabriel Borić and the Chilean political future: "My shadow is contrast to your over-exposure.
