Many times, groups and families discuss the most popular names among the Greeks, but nobody – until recently – could not safely and reliably claim the most common Greek name.
When, however, the science of statistics and numbers arrives in the middle, things are quite clear and can give us a clear picture of the most prevalent Greek names.
According to ELSTAT, the male name "Giorgos" and the female "Maria" are the most common names among the Greeks everywhere.
Specifically, "George" makes up 8.3% of the most popular male name, taking first place in the relevant list, while "Maria" was 8.3% and ranked first among women's names.
The second place for male names is "John" with 6.5%, followed by Dimitris with 6.4% in third place and the distance of breathing. The first five ended – with no surprises – "Constantinos" and "Nikos" with 6% and 5.7% respectively.
As far as women's names are concerned, Elena is 5.2% and Katerina 3.7%. The first five closed "Vasiliki" with 3.2%, and "Sofia" 2.3%.
