If a company wants to find a lot on the market of machine games, not on a new machine, but on new software and services – American market data suggests.

Whether gaming consoles can be sold to a huge loss, you should not expect huge revenue from hardware sales. This lesson can be extracted from US data contained in a report released last week by Entertainment Software Association (ESA), the organizer of the E3 video player conference, whose internal scale is likely to be global.

However, hardware is not cheap at all. For a better gaming console for better release, wealth will cost 120-150,000 worldwide, and computer games optimized for gambling are much more expensive than their fellow general purpose. Really huge money is not on machines: last year's US market had just $ 5.1 billion in sales, plus $ 2.4 billion for games, plus $ 2.4 billion for controllers, VR and other add-ons. Besides that. (This last value is impressive compared to 29.1 billion at the end of the year).

For a better type AAA game software, the amount of 18 to 20 thousand forints is charged, but many games are consumed by users over the lifecycle of the machine. Americans barely take police programs: only 17 percent of sales come from physical media, and 83 percent of the money comes from the download distribution. For this reason, the software vendor may benefit from software revenue if it develops its own software, but also when it manages the software platform.

Thus console manufacturers travel to target machines. In the current (home) generation, the Sony PlayStation 4 is the best, with 96.1 million units sold by the end of May. Microsoft's Xbox One sold just 42.6 million copies. The Nintendo Switch, released shortly thereafter, is worth 34.5 million, but in recent statistics it sells 30 percent more than Switch4, and nearly twice as big as the Xbox. In particular, it is important to emphasize how much Nintendo and Sony go down at home: in Japan, data released late May indicate that the former manufacturer sold 27,000 devices a week, the last 9,000 – while only 88 units. .

No wonder Steve Spencer's Xbox boss said the number is not important. The Verge He said that the industry is not about how much a console is selling, but how many people are playing on the platform. Obviously, the number of players is not completely independent of the number of machines sold. However, the player's activity and the quality of the game can be considered as a feature in which the manufacturer with a modest sales index can produce value for money. However, not only are Sony and Nintendo competing with Microsoft: after music and recording, streaming services that transform the future of video games, with public testing of Microsoft's xCloud launch this fall, for example, Apple and Google are struggling with their own solutions.
