Hathras, Uttar Pradesh:
A man who was briefly imprisoned in 2018 in a sexual assault case, and has since been released on bail, reportedly killed his father, a survivor in a village in the Hathras Uttar Pradesh district, about 200km from Delhi, on Monday.
A quarrel on Monday around 4:30 p.m., between the family of the survivor and the family of the accused in front of the village temple, ended in a shooting incident, which led to the death of the surviving father on his way to the hospital.
In a detailed statement on social media, Hathras police say defendant Gaurav Sharma was jailed for a month in prison in 2018 after the woman’s father launched an abuse case against him. The local court gave him bail after a month and he has been out of jail ever since.
“The man who died in July 2018 initiated proceedings against Gaurav Sharma for abuse. The accused went to prison after a month and received bail. Since then, both families have been hostile to each other. The main accused’s wife and aunt went to the village temple to pray where both of this man’s daughters were present.Women quarreled.The accused – Gaurav Sharma – and the woman’s father intervened and the quarrel between the men intensified.After that, Gaurav became furious and called to the scene some boys from his family and shot the man, “Police Chief Hathras Vineet Jaiswal said in a video statement posted on Twitter.
So far, one person has been arrested, a member of the Gaurav Sharme family. Asking officials to take strict measures in the case, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath instructed officials to invoke a strict National Security Act against all defendants involved in the case, the ANI news agency reported.
Videos shot by local reporters on Monday show the survivors crying in front of a police station and demanding justice.
“Please give me justice … please give me justice. He harassed me first, and now he has killed my father. He came to our village. There were six or seven people. My father had no enmity against anyone. His name is Gaurav Sharma, ”he is heard saying.
“He kept threatening us to bring the case back. My father had denied it earlier. My younger sister and I went to the local temple … he and his wife and two relatives were there and they started passing on comments to us. So we left place, ”the woman told reporters.
“We went to our fields where my father took potatoes. Then these people also got there and he (Gaurav) started commenting on me again. Then I opposed him. He and his relatives then treated me badly. My “My father then made them leave. They threatened us before leaving. Two hours later, around 3.30 pm, he came by car and about 4-5 people came and shot my father,” she added.
In September last year, 20-year-old Dalit was raped by four men from the so-called upper caste community in Hathras in an incident that shocked the entire nation.
She later died of her injuries at a hospital in Delhi. Police have come under widespread criticism for running the case and the victim’s late-night funeral, where the family said they were not allowed to.
Four defendants in this case are charged with gang rape and murder following a CBI investigation. The CBI has also been charged against defendants under the SC / ST (Crime Prevention) Act.
