In 2011, the BJP Supreme Army persuaded Pokhriyala to withdraw from duty after a series of allegations of fraud against his government, pushing Kanduri to be the chief minister.
Upon completion of the mandate of the Uttarakhand Secretary General, Pokhriyal remained in some kind of political wilderness for eight years. During those years he won in all the controversial elections, but he did not receive any ministerial affiliation in his country or in the Center.
Pokhriyal, however, is a prolific Hindu writer with 36 works to his praise, of which 10 translated into other languages.
His works include novels, short stories, poems and travelogues. He received a PhD at Hemwati University Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal.
