Depression mood and depression are known side effects associated with hormonal contraceptives. Depression can be severe and a risk factor for suicidal behavior and suicide. Patients should therefore be informed and consulted with their physician if they experience mood swings and depressive symptoms, even if they occur shortly after the start of treatment. The warning applies to all hormonal contraceptives sold in pharmacies, i.e. tablets, patches, vaginal ring and implant for subcutaneous use.
