The new most contagious variant of Covid-19 was discovered in Latvia

During the sequencing of samples taken from a patient with Covid, the Latvian Center for Biomedical Research and Studies identified a coronavirus variant in a sample of one patient with Covid-19, which is significantly more contagious and is thought to originate in the UK.

As the head of the Communications Department of the Ministry of Health, Oskars Šneiders, reports the portal, this case is related to a trip to Great Britain. Therefore, epidemiologists recall the requirement to perform a Covid-19 test upon return from the UK and to follow the self-isolation requirements very carefully.

In return, all Latvians are urged to adhere even more strictly to previously known prevention measures – removing, thoroughly washing or disinfecting hands and staying in their household as much as possible.

The results of several studies show that this variant of coronavirus is characterized by a faster spread of up to 70% compared to previously circulating SARS-CoV-2 strains. However, so far there is no evidence that this variant of the virus can cause a more severe course of the disease. Covid-19 vaccines developed and registered in the European Union are also considered effective against the new variant of Covid-19.

It has already been reported that, in preparation for the increase in cases, the Cabinet of Ministers last week allocated 11.7m euros to create extra beds in hospitals to treat patients with Covid-19 and to provide the necessary medical equipment and more diagnostic facilities. At the same time, each resident can reduce the spread of the disease by carefully adhering to safety measures set by epidemiologists and reducing daily contact with people with whom they do not live in the same household, the Ministry of Health emphasizes.
