British scientists linked to the Oxford University are looking for red meat tax. The introduction of such a tax can benefit healthcare in many countries, they claim. Scientists estimate that by 2020, around 2.4 million deaths worldwide will be the result of red meat consumption. In addition, it provides $ 285 billion in public health costs. She published her study in the scientific journal Plos One.
In cooperation with research centers in the United States and the United Kingdom, they tried to achieve the optimal red meat tax in 149 countries to cover healthcare costs as much as possible. In the world they achieve the desired average rate of 16% on red meat and in western countries, which should be 20%. On processed meat products, the tax rate should be considerably higher. The optimum tax rate on red meat would generate around $ 172 billion worldwide and thus cover 70 percent of the damage that the consumption of meat products costs to society.
In their study, scientists have mainly focused on the consequences for public health, but indirectly mentioning the effects on CO2 emissions in their publication. The tax would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 100 million tonnes, mainly due to less beef consumption.
