Curaçao also won the second match of the World Cup qualifiers. The away game in Cuba was won by 1-2. National coach Guus Hiddink saw Leandro Bacuna and Charlison Benschop score goals.
Bacuna, a former FC Groningen player and currently under contract with Cardiff City, was sent off in the twelfth minute, bypassed the offside trap and kept a cool eye on Cuban goalkeeper Sandy Sanchez. After half an hour, Cuba came along. And how. Onel Hernández, from the left wing, threw the ball from the edge of the penalty area into the intersection.
The final score in Havana was put on the scoreboard shortly before half-time by Charlison Benschop, a player of Apollon Limassol and a former player of RKC, AZ, Hannover 96 and FC Groningen, among others. Benschop intercepted a cross from Jarchini Antonio (Cambuur), who cleverly used his speed from the right side.
Curaçao was a much better team. Especially in the final phase – when Curaçao seemed to stretch over time – they still had a lot of great chances, but the offensive that happened by chance didn’t lead to more goals.
