A married couple from Arizona, Arizona, has to pay $ 12.23 million for a fee to launch websites that allowed them to download pirated copies of Nintendo games.
James and Cristian Mathias pleaded guilty. With the help of its own device – Mathias Designs – a couple founded two sites. Both have been allowed to download illegal versions of such titles as Mario Kart 64, Donkey Kong Country and Pokmon Yellow.
In July this year, Nintendo's lawyers demanded that the sites be turned off. They are currently welcoming visitors to the Japanese corporation. Communication also explains that websites have broken copyright (thank you, TorrentFreak).
The fees awarded are high, but it is possible that the purpose of the verdict was to prevent other pirates. It should be noted that many similar portals stopped working before the process was completed.
Of course, it is not clear whether Mathias actually will pay Nintendo for the entire sum. In some such cases, additional settlements were executed in which the accused committed to pay much less.
