Light and low VAT on Monday! Know if you will benefit



The decision was passed by the Council of Ministers when on April 24th approved the decree-law regulating the application of a reduced VAT rate (6%) to the fixed component of certain deliveries of electricity and natural gas.

The government estimates that this measure will reduce the bill for more than three million contracts on electricity and one million and 400,000 contracts on natural gas. Find out if you're useful.

Will I use a discount on VAT on my invoice?

The change in the VAT rate will apply only to power contracted to 3.45kVA (Kilovoltampere) and low pressure consumption natural gas does not exceed 10,000 m3 (cubic meters) per year.

Power: What is the contracted power?

Contracted power is the maximum available power that the consumer chooses in accordance with the electrical equipment he uses. Each rating of power corresponds to a certain price in the account. The contracted power is measured in VA (Volt-Ampere).

The greater the power in your home, the greater the number of electrical appliances you can connect simultaneously. There are 13 contracted power ranges from 1.15 kVA to 41.4 kVA. The most common ratings in Portugal are 3.45 kVA and 6.9 kVA. To know what power to hire, you can use this simulator.

How much does VAT reduction on your account?

The government has estimated that anyone who spends 180 kWh, a power of 3.45 kVA, will save:

  • 33.84 euros a year if you are a client EDP
  • 32.76 euros a year if you are a client Endesa
  • 27.72 euros a year if you are a client Golden energy.

Already for consumption of 100 kWh at the same power, the savings will amount to 23.28 euros a year in EDP, 22.68 euros per year in Endesi and 19.92 euros a year in Gold Energy.

According to Lusi, reduced VAT rate will be "6% on land and 4% and 5% in autonomous regions of Azores and Madeira".
