As part of the scientific work, the scientists injected NeoVax into a group of eight people with skin cancer. Moreover, it was introduced approximately 18 weeks after the first tumor removal surgery. The vaccine itself causes the immune system to recognize mutated molecules located on the surface of cancer cells.
To create a personalized vaccine for the patient, experts took samples of his blood and tumors. Based on this, a highly specific treatment was developed that helped a particular patient’s immune system identify and destroy cancer cells. As it turned out, the effectiveness of the vaccine is not lost for years – scientists tested it four years after its introduction. According to them, cells of the immune system of vaccinated people can still detect neoantigenic melanoma cells and destroy them.
