Two-thirds of Russians with SARS continue to work. These are the results of a survey conducted by Health Mail.ru. According to TASS, 65% of citizens neglect sick leave. And among those who, when colds, do not go to work, almost half continue to work from home.
In addition, 50% of the respondents consulted physicians only in a critical situation. If it's a cold, people are just treated. Meanwhile, not everyone knows how to properly treat ARVI. Some popular methods are frankly harmful, and many of the miraculous drugs that are advertised in commercial stalls on TV are simply useless. Specifically for the Petrozavodsk portal, says a Karelian general practitioner with 10 years of experience tells you exactly what you need to do and what you cannot do especially if you are not feeling well.
Can I work during a cold?
Sometimes a person expects the nausea to go through and continues to go to work. Thus, it exposes other risks of infection through infection, and itself risks complications: pneumonia, sinusitis, otitis media and even myocarditis - inflammation of the heart. Even if a person is easily ill, this does not mean that the illness can be neglected. Under stress, the body's defensive ability decreases, the disease can worsen.
And if you drink the powder that appears in the commercial? They also show happy healthy people who immediately go to work or hike with a miracle cure!
The powders remove the symptoms and the virus does not disappear and continues to infect the cells. You can drink them to improve well-being, but you should not think you have recovered and ran to unload cars. Remember that powders and aromas are added to these powders - they are not the safest components, but completely harmful to allergy sufferers.
What symptoms suggest staying home? For example, runny nose - should this be considered as well?
The main symptom is temperature. But here a lot depends on well-being. Headache, severe sore throat, cough, shortness of breath, chest pain. This indicates that at least you do not have to go to work. With a slight runny nose, of course, you can use drops, but you still need to monitor your condition.
Ok, I stayed home. And under what conditions is medical help already needed?
If the condition of the body does not improve during the day but worsens, a doctor should be consulted. Signs when you need to turn on the alarm: cough with green or brownish spit, streaks of blood; severe headache; high fever; rash. Generally, rashes and blemishes on the body are a cause for concern (remember the awful meningococcal infection!). And pain on the face, upper jaw, forehead can be signs of sinusitis. If the ear is very inflamed, you should not go to the doctor but run.
It is thought that the cold is not treated at all. Is that right?
The treatment of viral diseases (and so-called cold is ARVI, that is, a viral infection) is symptomatic. In other words, the symptoms are eliminated. Clogged nose drops can be used to avoid complications. Throat - Rinse, spray. The same candy sold at the pharmacy contains antiseptic substances, relieves pain and improves well-being.
Lemon tea will help?
They used to say that high-dose vitamin C helps cure. But there is no convincing data. Lemon, in general, should be handled with caution: in a cold person, the mucous membrane becomes inflamed and worse with acid. Better honey, raspberries. But what you really need to do is drink a lot of fluid. Helps eliminate toxins.
If we talk about simple methods - remember to ventilate the rooms and, if possible, humidify the air.
But what about antiviruses that are so aggressively advertised on TV?
Most of the antivirus products displayed in ads are simply unproven. Large studies have not been conducted on large groups of patients. Even if there were tests in small groups - this is not an indicator of effectiveness. You can consider them a safety indicator (it won't be worse), but to prove that the drug works, you need a normal "blind" test with a control group. Sometimes it is indicated that the drug should be taken within a week; but the usual cold will pass in a week!
Often people say: I drink this medicine, and it helps me ... It means nothing. Maybe the body can handle the disease on its own. When this drug was not available, people had the same SARS - and were recovering in the same way.
Should I drink antibiotics for a cold?
Antibiotics are used to fight the bacteria. ARVI is a viral infection. Viruses and bacteria are completely different "things". Antibiotic viruses do not kill.
If you drink antibiotics from the first days of illness, it will harm your body, and, no matter how pathetic it may sound, to all of humanity. Because now more and more bacteria are becoming resistant to antibiotics, and people are already starting to die from diseases that were treated with simple penicillin half a century ago.
Another thing is that if a person has been ill for a long period of time he cannot recover, his condition worsens, which means that the conditionally pathogenic bacteria that live in us have become dangerous. And you need to fight them with antibiotics.
Should I lower the temperature?
Low - no. With the help of temperature, the body fights the virus, producing antibodies, its own interferon. If a person can handle the temperature and is below 38.5, it is better to withstand it. But of course, if a patient has a fever or risk of seizures and some chronic illnesses, that's no joke.
Classic folk remedies: vodka with pepper, vodka with honey, vodka with vodka ...
It's all very simple: alcohol is of course used as an antiseptic, but if taken internally, it does not fight the viruses that infect your cells. On the contrary - it inhibits the immune system. If you so want to use vodka in your treatment, wipe the surfaces in the house with it - it will make more sense.
