SINGAPORE – A 17-year-old man died after a basketball building in Bedok fell on him on Monday (July 26th) night.
Police said they were called around 8:45 p.m. and found an injured teenager next to a collapsed building near Block 18 Bedok South Road.
“A 17-year-old male teenager was unconscious when he was transported to hospital, where he subsequently died of his injuries,” police told ST on Tuesday.
They are investigating a case of unnatural death.
The Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) was also called and took the boy to Changi General Hospital (CGH).
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was performed on him while he was taken to CGH, the SCDF said.
In a post on Facebook on Tuesday morning, the East Coast City Council said: “Based on the information received, the structure of the basketball hoop collapsed and fell on one of the users of the court. For the safety of our residents, we closed the basketball court immediately to conduct a thorough integrity check of all the buildings there.
“Our heart goes to the victim and his family. We will work closely with relevant agencies to provide them with support and assistance. “
The city council said it is cooperating with police investigations and called on those who have more information about what happened to contact the Bedok Police Department 1800-244-0000.
In a video posted last night by Facebook user Ak Ong to the page of Chinese daily Lianhe Wanbao, the structure of the basketball hoop can be seen completely ripped out of the ground.
Several observers observed paramedics applying CPR to a boy lying in the field.
