The mosquitoes transmit the virus to the western Nile virus

Enjoying hot summer evenings can quickly stop the mosquitoes. Pigs are definitely boring, and small insects can also be the carriers of the Western Nile virus. The infection of this disease in Slovenia is rare, but this year, due to the occurrence of a virus near Slovenia, a preventive test of blood transfusion units in the Western Nile virus was found.

The occurrence of Western Nile virus has been confirmed in at least one of the last six seasons in all countries bordering Slovenia. The maximum number of confirmed patients infected with this virus was detected near the Slovenian-Croatian border by 2018. Prior to the first confirmation of the Western Nile virus, the area of Slovenia has been classified as an area with the potential of this virus due to natural environmental conditions that enable the vector carrier's life.

The first case of acute infection with the Western Nile virus was confirmed in Slovenia in August 2013. Four cases of Western Nile virus infection were confirmed last year. One of them was introduced, most likely from Croatia, explained Eva Grilc from the National Institute of Public Health STA. Other diseases that can carry mosquitos in Slovenia have so far not been discovered.

80 percent of the disease is devoid of signs and symptoms, about one fifth of the patients may feel flu-like illness. Approximately one percent, who is primarily over the age of 50, chronic patients and those with impaired immune systems may have central nervous system disorders. There are no vaccines to prevent infection with humans, but there is also a vaccine for horses. Treatment is only in the form of supportive therapy that ensures the functioning of the body or the protection of the brain in the event of an infection.

Due to the occurrence of Western Nile virus near Slovenia, this year, the state-level virus raising alert level was raised to one level. This means that all patients with neurological problems also test this virus and also check all donated blood units. "The disease is not only transmitted by the tip of the mosquito but by the transfusion of infected blood, especially if the donor comes from countries where such infections exist," Grilčeva explained.

However, as he pointed out, mosquitoes are several times worse than real dangers, but it is still good to protect the mosquitoes. We can do this with long sleeves and pants, which in the hot summer months is not the most practical solution. That is why we can help with repellents that prevent mosquito bites, and we must use them exactly according to the manufacturer's instructions, called Grilčeva.

The presence of mosquitoes can also be limited by arranging the house environment so that it is as small as possible for mosquitoes and their reproduction. We will make sure that the water in the bowls in the glasses, the flower pots and the shaft does not stagnate. With windows on the windows we can prevent the entry of boring insects into the apartments.

The mosquito season takes us from June until the end of September, even longer if it is a very warm year. Grillec said that last year was a very intense season in Greece and Croatia. There are no alarming data yet this year, but it's likely to start appearing.

The Western Nile Virus was discovered in the northwest of Uganda in the West Nile province of 1937. The virus adapts to different ecosystems and hosts. It was found in 65 different types of mosquitoes, although only a few species of mice of the culex genus, in which the virus can be multiplied, are important for the transmission of the virus.
