KONGSBERG commissioned Leclanche's energy storage solutions for fast-paced electric and hybrid ships

Kongsberg Maritime has chosen Leclanché, one of the world's leading storage companies, as a battery partner and supplier of customized energy storage solutions for the shipbuilding industry. Partnership contributes to KONGSBERG's new generation of hybrid energy solutions that set new standards of efficiency in the design of autonomous and floating facilities and significantly reduce the impact on the environment.

Leclanche batteries will be part of KONGBSERG's hybrid solutions. As part of the partnership, Leclanché will continue to handle one of the largest single-order marine battery systems to date, consisting of a total of nine ships with 45MWh of batteries. The systems are being built in Leclanche, Switzerland, and the cells are produced at Willstätt in Germany.

– The first joint project will be <span class=
Yara Birkeland, the world's first autonomous and non-emission container vessel built on behalf of YARA, one of the world's leading fertilizer manufacturers and environmental protection providers. Yara Birkeland will replace 40,000 truck trips annually, eliminating NOx and CO2 emissions. It will also improve road safety and reduce noise and dust emissions associated with truck driving in densely populated urban areas.

The second project concerns the Grimaldi Green 5th Generation (GG5G) ships. Grimaldi is one of the world's largest roll-on / roll-off (RoRo) and roll-on / roll-off passenger (Ro-Pax) vessels operators. The Kongsberg hybrid drive system includes Leclanche's wave generators, frequency drives, power management systems and battery systems. The GG5G will be the first of the new Hybrid RoRo series of fossil-fueled marine fuels, while the batteries in the harbor provide power and peak load coverage.

The new partnership with KONGSBERG is based on Leclanché's strategy of moving from a clean cell manufacturer to a vertically integrated system supplier and emerging market target, such as merchandising and fleet transport. Leclanché has invested early in the development of the DNV-GL certified marine battery system and is the first battery supplier to fully comply with the current stringent regulations in 2015. DNV GL is an internationally accredited body for registration and certification of ships based in Høvik, Norway.

Froden Adventure, EVP's supply chain Kongsberg Maritime, said: "Leclanche's ability to cover the whole chain of value from the development and production of lithium cells in Europe to complete the certified marine battery system combines with its own hybrid energy technology as one source of supplier electrification solutions that will enable lower operating costs and environmental sustainability for all types of ships. "

Anil Srivastava, CEO of Leclanché, said: "Kongsberg's Naval Partnership, one of the world's leading providers of marine electrical power and Leclanche, has the potential to transform because it delivers low emission and emission-free solutions to an important, fast-growing marine market. is an integral part of our focus on the electrification of the fleet, and delivery is excellent for our superior battery systems as well as our partner approach in delivering emission reduction solutions. "We see paradigmatic change in the maritime industry Partnerships with world companies such as KONGSBERG again show that Leclanche's time has come. "
