Distraction is largely responsible for serious accidents

BERN – According to the Information Center for Accident Prevention (BFU), the most serious traffic accidents are caused by disturbed road users. Concerns cause heavy injuries to cyclists.

In 2017, 1111 people were seriously or mortally injured in Swiss roads on account of denied road users, as reported by the BFU on the basis of their SIS 2018 report, which analyzes the level of safety and accidents in road traffic.

Inappropriate or disturbed road users are often responsible for accidents involving seriously injured or killed persons. On average, therefore, three seriously injured each day.

Young people are more confused

Distraction is not a phenomenon specific to gender: equally present in men and women. On the other hand, distraction plays a significantly greater role for 18 to 24-year-olds than for older victims of unhappy cases.

According to the BFU, almost the same number of serious accidents occurs as a result of neglecting the championship, which is even the most common cause of accidents in urban areas. In three of the four serious accidents due to prejudice, car drivers are guilty. Victims of preventive neglect, along with motorcyclists and bicyclists, are primarily pedestrians. About 40 percent of those who were mortally injured were on foot.

Excessive speed daily causes two serious injuries, daily alcohol consumption. These two causes of accidents are therefore less common, but alcohol and speed accidents would have far more serious consequences and ended up more often fatal.

The BFU sees a satisfactory development in the development of accidents in recent years and decades. Although 230 people were injured in road traffic last year, 14 times more than in the previous year. Despite this short-term increase, the number of people killed in the last ten years has been reduced by an average of 17 years each year.

There is no fall in cycling accidents

Although the number of serious passenger car injuries has been halved for the past decade, there is no reduction among bikers, the BFU writes.

According to Federal Traffic 2040, bicycle traffic will rise twice as fast as a motorized private carriage. The growing density and heterogeneity of traffic has become more and more difficult, especially in villages and cities, to prevent accidental injury and death.

For bicycle accidents, various sources of danger are authoritative. For example, cyclists were seriously injured in accidents because, for example, they had a lack of awareness of danger and too little knowledge relevant to traffic, they were often visible at night, especially during the day and were not following traffic rules.

A set of risk factors

Likewise, it is necessary to improve driving behavior in the future on the side of a motor vehicle that manages bicycles. Further, the collision characteristics of motor vehicles should be improved.
