Nintendo has lowered the sales forecast for its Switch game console despite a very strong Christmas job.
The Japanese gaming specialist sold around 9.4 million switches in the last quarter. But the initial goal of selling 20 million consoles by the end of March was no longer possible: after nine months, Nintendo has only 14.5 million. Now the forecast is reduced to 17 million units. Even so, Nintendo is competing with Sony PlayStation 4 and Microsoft's Xbox One is still very good.
Good overnight demand Nintenda celebrated 104.9 billion yen (840 million euros) in the cash register on Thursday, nearly a quarter more than a year ago. Sales rose 26 percent to 608.4 billion yen (about 4.88 billion euros).
The failure of the previous console "Wii U" had previously pushed the company into a red and a crisis. With a switch that can be used at home on TV and on the road, the traditional company has once again succeeded but also hit. Approximately 32.3 units were sold since the launch in March 2017.
Nintendo also postponed the release of the first "Mario Kart" smart game for the summer on Thursday – it was expected to begin by the end of March. The company has long sought to make its popular toy characters just on their own available devices. But with the rise in smartphone games that slow down the sale of the 3DS mobile console, Nintendo has changed. Among other things, there is already a "Super Mario" game for a smartphone. Meanwhile, the sale of the 3DS console dropped from just under 5.9 to 2.3 million units in the first nine months of the fiscal year. / So / DP / mis
