Cincinnati Reds vs Arizona Diamondbacks – April 9, 2021

After a successful first home bout, the Cincinnati Reds (5-1) want to take their attacking machine with them on a journey as they head into the desert to take over the Arizona Diamondbacks (2-5) at Chase Field in downtown Phoenix. Prepare for a dose of #LateNightReds, folks. The first field is at 21:40 EDT. You can watch the match on Bally Sports Ohio or listen on 700 WLW.

How impressive were the Reds bats during the first week of the season? The Reds have scored the most passes in the first six games for any MLB team since 1999, and the most passes through the first six games in the entire history of the Reds.

Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks moved in the opposite direction from the Reds, winning just two of seven games to Padres and Rockies away. They also allowed 43 runs, including several offensive explosions.

Beginner pitchers

In its first start in 2021 on Saturday, Tyler Mahle he opposed the Cardinals well, allowing three runs on four goals while throwing out nine shots in five innings. Two of those rides came across house lines to Paul DeJong.

Mahle’s fast ball averaged 95.1 mph on Saturday, compared to 93.9 in 2020. He used all three of his pitches roughly the same as last year, with four-stitch fastball being the most used, followed by a slider . A split finger is used only about 11 percent of the time and almost always for the left hand. Mahle’s highest breath rate on Saturday was actually his 28.6 percent skater, but his fast ball was just behind 23.5 percent. He ended up with more shots from his fast ball, but he also threw more of his fast ball.

Diamondbacks will counter with a right-hander Taylor Widener, also its second start to the season. Widener threw on Sunday, ruled out Padres and allowed just three goals with five attacks and three walks in six innings. It was his first start in the major disciplines. In 2020, in his rookie season, he was knocked out of the bull in 12 games.

Widener relies on three pitches: fastball with four seams, slider and upholstery. He’s predominantly a fast-throw pitcher – he threw it almost 65 percent of the time in 2020 – and uses his fracture pitches as secondary pitches. The slider will throw mostly at right-handers. The change is mostly thrown at left-handed strikers. Widener’s fast ball averaged 94.5 mph in 2020. In his first game of the year, the speed of his fast ball was a little lower, averaging 92.8 mph. Its breaking ground will average between 85 and 86 mph.

Statistics are from 2020.

News and notes

Sonny Gray could be back this week

Ahead of today’s game, manager David Bell said that if the simulated game of Sonny Gray he expects tomorrow goes well, the starter’s right hand will return to rotation this week.

Jesse Winker is back in the squad

Jesse Winker is returning to the Reds tonight after being absent from several games due to illness. He enjoys the new Reds broadcaster John Sadak as much as the fans.

Earlier today at Redleg Nation

Listen to the latest episode of Redleg Nation radio, where Chad Dotson and Chris Garber talk about the Reds 5-1.

John Ring wrote today about the fuss and excitement that the 2021 team brings to the table and compared this start to the quick starts that other Reds teams had.

Final thoughts

Hey, look at the Reds, now on top of the Fangraphs’ chance to win NL Central. I don’t care if it’s the first week of the season. I will enjoy the ride this team is on.
