DIY store of Darkins to celebrate 50 years of trading

A DIY shop in the village is set up to celebrate a special anniversary.

The Darkins Supply Store on Swan Street, Sible Hedingham, will serve customers for half a century next month and will host a pork roast to celebrate the occasion.

The store is now under its third generation of management after Stephen Metson took control of his father-in-law Bob Darkins in October 2015.

Mr Metson, 36, was a carpenter and carpenter before taking care of family business with his wife Victoria.

He said: "It has been a fantastic few years, I have to meet many different clients, some who have been repeat customers and others who have never been here before.

"I'm very proud of the work we've been doing since I took control, it was a real learning curve from following Bob, but I really enjoyed it.

"We're a fairly busy store, people love to come here because we do most of the things you need and sell even small things like a single bolt or a screw.

"I am very lucky to have a team with a lot of knowledge. The staff comes from different backgrounds and has different skills that I think is one of the reasons we have succeeded."

The shop was opened for the first time by Don and Joan Darkins in 1967, near the former Swan Public House of Sible Hedingham.

After a successful period in the village, the couple's son, Bob, founded a second store on Bridge Street, Great Yeldham in 1973.

The stores were joined by one another until the decision was made to merge them in 1989. The merger saw a single store located at 122 Swan Street, Sible Hedingham, from where it was founded since.

In addition to hosting a roast pork, Saturday, October 6, Darkins will offer a one-week savings that will allow customers a 10% discount on items.
