This is the FinCon week! FinCon is a conference where a group of nerds get together to talk about finance and drinking beer, especially at the same time. This year, the big show is in Orlando.
In celebration of FinCon, the 1500 days make a small diversion this week. Today's post is designed for the participants. I will teach you to make new friends at the conference. From Tuesday to Friday, I will present other bloggers in the form of my series of 10 questions.
And readers, if you're close to Orlando and you'd like to chat for a spell, give me a message.
How to make new friends
The best part of FinCon is the community. No matter how big the conference is, it does not last even a week. Therefore, your mission in Orlando is to achieve lasting value by making new friends (even on the net).
I know what you're thinking:
I'm a introvert!
The crowds are terrifying!
People scare me!
Hey, me too. If you meet me and I seem extroverted, I'm doing really well!
Coming out of the shell it will take some work, but believe me, it will be worth it. To help you, I present my best tips for becoming an extrovert FinCon.
Tip 1: plan
The FinCon website has a list of all the conference participants. Review it and find out who you'd like to meet. Establish a contact through the official FinCon app (search in your app store for FINCON):
Can I offer you a coffee tomorrow morning?
When you meet, be strategic with the conversations doing your homework. Instead of a trivial conversation, look for the blog or podcast of your new friend. Instead of opening with:
Of course it's wet in Orlando, eh?
I read your article on how to save money on travel hacking and I really appreciated it!
Your new friend will be impressed and the conversation will be much more productive.
Tip 2: smile
Imagine crossing the FinCon hotel and seeing two other participants; one wears a frown and the other has a big smile. Which is more accessible? The smiling, of course! Happiness reduces intimidation and invites conversation. Do not worry!
Tip 3: offer of help
At the New Orleans FinCon edition, the founder of the conference Philip Taylor said something extraordinary. It went like this:
Ask the others what you can do to help them.
I encourage you to try it. When you meet someone, ask them what you can do for them. I have been practicing since then and people are sincerely grateful for the gesture. He also led to a wonderful collaboration.
Tip 4: Stay in your circles
Obviously you want to have a deep conversation with Mr. Money Mustache, Pat Flynn and J. Money. So does everyone else! Do not be afraid to say "Hello!" To your favorite blogging superstar (I guarantee they are all kind people), but be respectful of their time. A better strategy is to talk to people in an audience that are similar in size to yours.
Tip 5: Talk To Me!
introverts to merge! Let's move on to this thing together! I need all the help I can get. If you see a stupid boy with dinosaur shirts (and carrying plastic dinosaurs), come and have a chat. Unlike dinosaurs, I will not bite.
See you in Orlando?
FinCon is a wonderful conference, but to get the most out of it, you'll have to get out of your shell. My mission for you is to create three new friends in Orlando. When the conference is over, follow. Some of our best works happen when we exploit the forces of others.
Now tell me, what can I do to help you?
