How to make simple recipes for syrup | Bigger Bolder Baking

One of the things I prefer to share with you are the basic tools and ingredients needed to be an incredibly bold baker, one that can always cook, anywhere, and safely. My Bold Baking Basics series included recipes on how to prepare basic ingredients like homemade cream cheese, homemade butter and one of my favorites: how to make homemade extracts.

This fall we are reporting Bold Baking Basics! We are going bigger and bolder, and the first is like making simple syrups. My recipe includes 4 of my favorite variations and in the video, I share some wonderful ways you can use these syrups for cooking, cooking, drinking and more!

What is a simple syrup?

The simple syrup is a thin syrup made from just two basic ingredients, sugar and water, hence the name "simple" syrup. It is a kind of syrup and can be used alone or infused with your favorite ingredients.

I am so excited to share with you my favorite infusions, which are: vanilla, mint, orange and cinnamon. To prepare a simple syrup, just add the sugar, the water and the aroma that you want to infuse in a small saucepan over medium heat. Once the sugar has melted, I burn my syrups for 7-8 minutes. This is enough time to develop the syrupy texture and infuse the flavors you are adding, all while keeping the finished product thin and clear.

What can the simple syrup be used for?

Simple syrup can be used to flavor drinks, moisten sweets and add flavor and sweetness to many things.

In cocktails and cocktails, I love using simple syrup because they are often infused like my cinnamon, mint or orange syrup. Not only do these syrups add a layer of flavor, but they dissolve easily and add a nice body to any drink.

In cooking I like to use these syrups instead of liquids to add flavor and sweetness. My simple vanilla syrup is perfect for brushing cakes and sweet bread – this keeps the cake moist and adds the perfect touch of sweetness. The options are really endless, once you become creative with all the combinations of flavors. You'll always want to have these simple syrups at your fingertips.

Are they like the simple syrups that Starbucks uses?

I'm sure many of you are familiar with stock syrups or simple syrups like the ones you add to Starbucks drinks to get flavors like a mint mocha, vanilla or hazelnut. These syrups are usually made with artificial ingredients and are often only for mixed and hot drinks.

My reserve syrups are made of all natural ingredients, without added flavors, colors or preservatives. Also, my syrups can be used for cooking and baking, they are not as soon as for hot or mixed drinks. So yes, on the one hand they're like the syrups that Starbucks uses – but you can use them for much more.

How long will simple syrups last?

Because these simple syrups are made of all natural ingredients, they do not have a shelf life equal to what you might see in the store. That said, they last very well covered and stored in an airtight jar for up to 2 months. These wonderful aromatic syrups are a must for any baker or cook, and I do not see the time you get creative with this method and find your simple syrups.

    orange peel

Vanilla Simple Syrup

  1. In a small pot add * sugar, water and vanilla. Melt the sugar and cook over a low heat for about 7-8 minutes over medium heat.

  2. Turn off the heat and let the syrup continue to infuse.

  3. Transfer to an airtight container and keep covered in the refrigerator for up to 2 months.

Mint Simple syrup

  1. In a small pot add * sugar, water and mint. Melt the sugar and cook over a low heat for about 7-8 minutes over medium heat.

  2. Turn off the heat and let the syrup continue to infuse.

  3. Transfer to an airtight container and keep covered in the refrigerator for up to 2 months.

Simple cinnamon syrup

  1. In a small pot add * sugar, water and cinnamon sticks. Melt the sugar and cook over a low heat for about 7-8 minutes over medium heat.

  2. Turn off the heat and let the syrup continue to infuse.

  3. Transfer to an airtight container and keep covered in the refrigerator for up to 2 months.

Simple orange syrup

  1. In a small pot add * sugar, water and orange peel. Melt the sugar and cook over a low heat for about 7-8 minutes over medium heat.

  2. Turn off the heat and let the syrup continue to infuse.

  3. Transfer to an airtight container and keep covered in the refrigerator for up to 2 months.
