Are you ready to install iOS 12 on your iPhone or iPad? The release date of iOS 12 is September 17th, and if you plan to upgrade immediately, it may take a few minutes to prepare for the iOS 12 software update.
We will provide some useful tips to make your iOS device ready for the latest Apple mobile operating system. From the confirmation of the compatibility of the device to the execution of some basic cleaning and maintenance operations, you will be ready to upgrade to iOS 12 in no time.
1: Check the compatibility of iOS 12: the iPhone or the iPad can work with iOS 12?
The first thing you want to do is consult the list of iOS 12 compatible devices to make sure your specific iPhone, iPad or iPod touch supports the new operating system. The good news is that iOS 12 offers generous support for a wide range of devices, and if your iPhone is more recent than a 5s or iPad is more recent than an Air, it will be able to run the iOS update 12. The complete list is as follows:
- iPhone with iOS 12 support: iPhone XS Max, iPhone XS, iPhone XR, iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 5s, iPhone SE
- iPad with iOS 12 support: iPad Pro 12.9 "1st and 2nd generation, iPad Pro 10.5", iPad Pro 9.7 ", iPad Air 2, iPad Air 1, iPad 5 gen, iPad 2018 (not pro), iPad 2017 (not pro) , iPad Mini 4, iPad Mini 3, iPad Mini 2
- iPod with support for iOS 12: iPod Touch 6th Generation
Note that the iPhone XS, the iPhone XS Max and the iPhone XR will come pre-installed with iOS 12, so you do not need to update those devices unless a smaller dot version is available for them ( like iOS 12.0.1 or iOS 12.1, etc.).
The good news is that iOS 12 aims to improve the performance of older iPhone and iPad devices, so if you have a device running iOS 11 or iOS 10 that seems slow, upgrading to iOS 12 could improve performance on such device.
2: reorder and free up storage space
Before upgrading to a new iOS version, it's often a good idea to tidy up your device, delete some unused apps, and update the remaining apps.
You'll also need to have some GB of storage space available to install iOS 12 first, so in addition to tidying up and getting rid of dusty apps, if you have limited space in the storage space now is the right time to care for this.
You can check the storage capacity of available devices by selecting Settings> General> iPhone Archiving / iPad Archiving
If you have little memory space, some easy ways to free up storage space in iOS include:
You'll need to have at least a couple of GB of space available to update iOS 12, partly because the iOS 12 download is several GB's and per se, and therefore needs temporary space to further complete the upgrade.
3: Update your apps
After deleting unused apps and freeing up storage space (if needed) and verifying that you have enough storage space to update iOS 12, we recommend that you update all iOS apps on your device so they are new and more likely to be compatible with the latest version of iOS.
Simply open the App Store, then go to the Updates tab and choose "Update all"
An additional bonus tip: be sure to review and update all your apps in the weeks following the installation of the iOS 12 software update, as other apps will be updated over time.
4: Backup of the iPhone or iPad
This is the most important step! You must back up an iOS device before installing iOS 12 or any other software update. Having new backups allows you to quickly recover if something goes wrong, and the ability to restore an iPhone or iPad from a new backup helps prevent permanent loss of data. Do not skip the backup!
You can back up to iCloud or iTunes or both.
To perform an iCloud backup of your iPhone or iPad, open the Settings app in iOS, then tap your name to access the iCloud settings, then go to "iCloud" and choose "iCloud Backup", then choose "Back Now ".
Prepare and complete iCloud backup right away before installing iOS 12, so that your data is just saved and backed up. This includes all your contacts, photos, notes, movies, apps, all personal data and device customizations.
You can also back up to iTunes on a Mac or PC. Connect your iPhone or iPad to a computer and open iTunes, then choose to back up. Be sure to encrypt your backup in iTunes so that your passwords and health data are preserved as well.
To be precise, you can back up to iCloud and iTunes, there's nothing wrong with backup redundancy and many might consider it prudent.
5: iOS 12 installation time!
Once the above tasks are completed, it is easy to install iOS 12. iOS 12 is a free software update for any compatible iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
The easiest way to install the update of iOS 12 is via the Settings app on iPhone or iPad. Just open Settings, go to General, then select Software Update. When iOS 12 is available, click Download and Install.
Remember, the official release date for iOS 12 is September 17, while beta users can download iOS 12 GM at this time from their devices.
