HPV, a silent, sexually transmitted infection that affects 80 percent of the population – Eco

The HPV Week of Awareness and Discovery was held from 18 to 22 March at the Ramón Santamarina Municipal Hospital. HPV is an human papillomavirus, a sexually transmitted infection that is very common in men and women, which is usually silent and therefore it is necessary to have medical examinations for proper diagnosis.

The tasks of the public health team are not exhausted in this case, but continue throughout the year, receiving all the women who come to receive information, evacuate suspicions, and carry out certain checks.

Normas Gómez, a nurse at a local hospitals ambulance that worked on the campaign, talked with El Eco de Tandil and provided information so that more and more people became aware of the importance of consultation and scrutiny for their own body and those of the rest.

Essential check

Human Papilloma Virus is a family of viruses that act on the skin, mouth and genital and / or anal area. There are more than 100 types of HPV. Such "low risk" types can cause benign lesions such as nipples. The so-called "high risk" can develop into permanent infection, cause pre-cancerous lesions and cervical cancer, anus, penis, mouth or throat. Every year, 5000 cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed in Argentina, and 1900 women die for this reason.

Physicians Pablo Esteche, Mercedes Richter and Rosana Fullone, together with the outpatient clinic group, made a proposal that included care for patients aged 21 to 65 years.

"There have been gynecological examinations and assessments of each patient according to medical indication. In parallel with this, it was normal and there were 24 shifts on demand, from Monday to Friday. During the year there will be other campaigns, hypertension, diabetes and others organized with referent physician, "he explained.

The expert pointed out that many women came to advise and also pairs interested in the subject, which she described as a very good sign.

"This does not end here, but the gynecological control of women continues throughout the year. There is an organizational chart date set by the Ministry of Health to raise awareness, but it does not end, continuity is a whole year, it is symbolic for a week days and work with an interdisciplinary team, "he said.

Raise awareness to prevent it

Gomez said that more and more people have access to information through social networks and come to consultations with previous information, but they can only doubt it when they are in front of a real professional.

While general symptoms and care guidelines are widespread, it is a good thing for every person to access the office because each case is unique and every patient has to be examined by a physician. Gynecological control in women is of the utmost importance, this should be done once a year, although this time it was targeted at the age group, is valid for all women, "he stressed.

The presence of papules or wounds on genitals, both in men and women, warns of the warning, and those who detect similar tissue injuries must immediately refer to medical consultation.

"It's the most common infection that spreads through the mucus." 80 percent of people have it and transmitted it. Emphasis is placed on women, but men are also carriers of the virus, "he explained.

Without encouraging to create fear in the population, equation and dissemination tasks are essential to raising awareness in the population and encourage them to carry out appropriate checks, from PAP to laboratory control, free of charge in the public health system. If the presence of the virus is discovered, there is a cure for disease control.

The best tool is prevention, and the only way to get good results is the intense and constant task of sex education in all areas and for all age groups.

"There must be sexual education for all ages, HPV does not discriminate, if preventive tools are not a major risk of infection." The use of a condom, although it looks very installed, does not apply in all cases, if a person has signs and symptoms and does not care about himself, that is the chain that never breaks, spreads. We need to be aware, some people are sorry, but that should not be so, so it's important to provide information and communicate in a timely manner, "said the nurse.

The hospitals pointed out that the week of consciousness served to expand control and see which high risk patients could be detected, evaluated, and initiated treatment.

Gomez stressed that "the campaign was not marked by social work or not, was visited all over the world, was accessible to the entire population." Throughout the year, obstetrics and gynecology clinics are available to everyone in the hospital, they must contact and request a resignation. In health centers, clinicians will analyze whether there are cases involving the hospital. "

Vaccine

HPV is transmitted from one person to another through sexual contact. The virus does not diminish when using a toilet, sharing cutlery or in the pool. It is a virus that is easily transmitted and is very common. It is estimated that 4 out of 5 people at one time of their life will contract one or more types of HPV.

The HPV vaccine is included in the Vaccination Calendar for women older than 11 years or those born after 2000 and for men of 11 years and who have been born since 2006.

These are two doses, separated for at least 6 months. No other dose has no protection. Therefore, it is important to complete the scheme, no matter how much the first dose is needed, as long as it lasts more than 6 months.

The state provides the vaccine free of charge and is mandatory for children and is available in health centers and public hospitals, and for men and women between 11 and 26 who live with HIV and who are transplanted – solid organs or hematopoietic cells. Women and men over the age of 9 are well suited to prevent HPV-related diseases. Adults who do not fall under the aforementioned specifications and wish to be immunized must buy a vaccine for its use.
